This is the first report I am ever writing, so don't be too strict with me!

I purchased this Car Mount / FM Transmitter about a week ago and have it in use for only two days now. You take the car mount out of the box, plug it into your cigarette lighter, and it works. It holds my iPhone 3GS nicely. I have a case on (Incipio Feather Case) and I do not need to take it off, it fits perfectly as you can adjust the width of the holder as well as the back part of it (little turning knob on the back for adjustment). I would think that other iPods and earlier iPhones would also fit without problems.
The car mount comes with an audio cable which you attach to the bottom part of the holder and plug it into your iPhone so you can make calls and hear the voice over your car radio. Haven't used it much but it works quite well. The audio quality is very good, only very little background noise and in my opinion superior to what I had used before (little wireless iGrip FM adapter). I am actually impressed by the sound quality the transmitter delivers. It comes with a little on/off button that is very convenient. You can turn the device on and off and decide when you iPhone should be charged or not. When in off mode it will of course not play music through the transmitter. You have four preset buttons where you can save a frequency for quick access. The search feature is also pretty cool as you are able to find a free station within seconds. Just press two buttons at the side for about 3 seconds and the transmitter selects a station where it can send on without interference. You can easily use the car mount in both vertical and horizontal mode. This comes in handy if you want to use your iPhone for GPS navigation.

The downside of this product is that it will not fit every car I guess. I am driving a Ford Taurus 2005, and the DC outlet is inconveniently positioned, which means when I plug it in and try to adjust the whole thing, the part that goes into the outlet is too short and does not let you adjust well. the plastic parts in the middle of my car are in the way so I have to turn the whole holder slightly to the side to get it in a stable and well visible position. But this will vary from car to car and is not necessarily a negative aspect of the product.

However, when I first plugged it in, it was very hard to remove it again. I actually slightly damaged the plastic and rubber parts of the charger because I had to literally rip it out of the DC outlet. In my opinion this is because a) I have a very tight cigarette lighter (at least I think) and b) there are small rubber/gummi part on the side of the thing that goes into the outlet. The rubber parts fitted the charger so tightly that it was very hard to take it out again. When I ripped it out the rubber wore off and is now slightly damaged. I am not sure if this was my fault, but I didn't expect it to be that hard to take the charger out again. I tried it in another car after that and there it fit just well, it wasn't a problem to take it out again.

Anyway, all in all I give four stars for this product, mainly because the sound quality is amazing and it pretty much does what it is supposed to do: it holds and charges your iPhone and also plays your music through the car radio in really good quality. It is rather expensive, but so far worth the money I as I enjoy listening to non-noisy music from my iPhone in my car.

----------------- edit on January 23rd: It's been a while since I purchased this unit, and gave it a rather positive review. Due to the fact that a lot of people have experienced huge problems with this car mount system I feel like editing my first review:

I have the item in use now for about 2 months, and I would still rate this prodcut 4 stars out of five. I understand that iPhones would not work with any case (I guess the thiker the worse...), however, it does with mine. I have a very thin case called iFeather, made by Incipio (for 3GS). My unit (crossing my fingers) still works flawlessly, has not fallen into pieces, although I pulled it out and plugged it back in (different cars) many times, and does not shut off randomly. The hands free feature works well also.
I feel sorry for all those who made bad experiences with this prodcut, but wanted to tell you that there are positive stories. Honestly, given the rather high price of the unit, I would hope that it would work without problems in more cases for more people. This surely seems to be a downside of the FlexPod X2!

(More customer reviews)I bought the HD tuner in a package that included the DIY car kit (KV-K1018).Reception was poor and would fade in and out especially when travelling into a new area that had strong FM stations near the broadcast frquency I had the HD tuner set to.This then necessitated changing the frequency setting on the HD unit to reduce interference.Overall I was unhappy with the experience and didn't think the HD tuner was going to work out.

Then I got this kit, marketed as the Professional kit.If you can get to your car radio, you can do it yourself.I had to google to find out how to get to my radio.It was simple from there.

The difference with this kit and the DIY one is that this kit uses your car's existing antenna for a signal and uses your car radio's antenna input to feed that signal in.Of course if your lucky enough to have an aux-in jack on your car radio, better yet.Conversely, the DIY kit uses a separate antenna for reception and another antenna (if you don't have an aux-in jack) to broadcast the signal wirelessly to your radio.Both of those antennas must be adhered to your windshield or rear window.A windsheild antenna does not get as good reception as the external antenna installed on my car.

The biggest advantage with this setup, in addition to a stronger signal by using your car's antenna, is that by intercepting the antenna signal to your car radio, your car radio receives only the HD unit's signal thereby eliminating interference which in turn means never having to adjust the HD unit's broadcast frequency.And when you turn off the HD unit, your car radio will receive the same reception it always did.

As for the HD tuner, I wish it had an aux-in jack for an MP3 player like some other brands have.

(More customer reviews)I haven't used many GPS systems before so this is more of a review of this individual system as it stands on its own and not comparing it to other systems. Living in a large city, I don't own a car, but recently I needed to make a trip that entailed visiting 7 or 8 locations all within a few hours of each other (in a rental car). I knew that I might have to change the order of when I would get to each location or possibly not go to them all.Not being very familiar with the area I figured that it might be a good idea to get a GPS. This unit worked perfectly for the whole trip. I programed in each address before leaving and saved it as a favorite location which made picking a new destination really easy while driving. All of the directions accurate, and the computer voice was easy to understand (and you have a choice of a few voices as well). I'm not sure how many 'favorite' locations you can put in but I had in over 10 so you can enter at least that many.

Here's a list of other features that I liked:
- It came with a lighter/power cord for the car.
- Came with a USB cable to charge on the computer.
- You can update maps on the computer and backup your maps/info.
- It actually came with Macintosh software!! (as well as Windows of course)
- It came with a very useful suction cup holder to attach to the front windshield (it worked very well and never came off)
- This is a refurbished unit but it looked brand new. I didn't even see a small scratch on the unit.
- I liked the night mode that had darker colors.
- There is an option to have the volume adjust based on your car speed.
- It is small enough to put into a pocket or bag when you leave the car.
- I didn't use them but it has a bicycle mode and a walking mode.
- You can buy updates to maps or other map locations online.

Some features that you may not like:
- It doesn't say the name of the street you need to turn onto. (I didn't really mind that, though)
- The screen is pretty small. I actually liked it this way though, as I didn't want it to take up too much of my view out the front window. But if you have trouble reading small text it might be hard to see what the exit is, etc. Some elements, like your speed or arrival time are pretty small.
- When you first turn it on it can take 4 or 5 minutes to locate the GPS satellites. (not sure how this compares to other units)
- It would probably be hard to enter a new address while you're driving as the screen is pretty small. That's why I pre-entered them before hand.
- You have to go through a few menus to change the volume. Not too bad if your parked but if you're driving it can be a little tricky. (Don't crash)

I think that's about it. Again, I'm not sure how this compared to other portable units or other built in units but for what I wanted this was perfect, especially for the price and as of this writing there is a rebate as well.

(More customer reviews)I bought this because my remote quit working and wouldn't work after I put a new battery in it. I even tried the programming procedure described in the owner's manual, with no success.
The kit has one spare remote and very easy instructions to reprogram your new remote.
As a matter of fact it is possible that the only thing you really need is the instructions: When I received the kit, I tried the reprogramming procedure on my old remote and it worked! I didn't even need the new one. This is why I suggest you look online for the proper reprogramming procedure before you buy this; you may not need a new remote, just the proper programming instructions.
If you do need a new remote though, buy this. Don't go to a Chevy dealer; They'll charge you probably around $50 to reprogram your remote, and much more if they take you for a ride (like they tell you your car needs a new BCM for instance).

Garmin Automotive Mount for nuvi Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this thing thinking I can mount it to the top of my dash.My dash has a slight curve to it, but, it looked like there was a few flat spots where the base could mount. I already new the suction cup wouldn't work on my dash.

Didn't work using the temporary adhessive.The temporary adhessive didn't stick to the dash at all.Before installation, I did wash/dry the dash good, to avoid oils, dust and other containmenants from effecting the adhessive.Playing with the second adhesive disk, it appears I need to mount this thing on a perfectly smooth and flat surface.The permanent adhessive should have better luck because it's stronger and probably can stick with less surface contact between it and the dash, but, by then I found I didn't like mounting the unit on the dash afte all.

Beyond the base, the biggest disappointment with this thing is that the arm that attaches to the base and ends in a ball upon which you mount the Nuvi mounting plate is fixed and doesn't adjust like the suction cup arm that comes with the Nuvi.If it did, I could possibly mount the base in the little shelf below the radio, with the end of the arm sticking out far enough to mount the Nuvi (which actually could work with the suction cup and that hard disk that comes with the Nuvi).Only way to use the arm is mounted on top of a horizonntal surface, like your dash.

Using the arm with the bean bag (this little piece of plastic is REALLY expensive) sort of worked until I had to suddenly swerve one day.Came crashing down --- happened after about a week of driving.

This period was long enough though to convince me that I rather not mount the Nuvi on the dash.Mounting on the dash is great for visibility of the Nuvi screen and for hearing the bluetooth hands free setup.But, the glow of the Nuvi on my windsheild was too distracting.

In the end, I bought a custom dash mount for my car that costs me $60 (Proclip).Works great, and I wasted my money on the Garmin Auto Mount and bean bag.Last negative:the quick release plate that connects to the suction cup that comes with the Nuvi has a microphone jack on it.The quick release plate that comes with the automotive mount doesn't.That sucks if you were thinking of using the auto mount in a second car.

(More customer reviews)EVERYONE should have a kitchen fire extinguisher.The FX10K is an attractive design and mounts easily.Unlike many extinguishers, the red safety tab is easy to remove when you are panicking and trying to get it off in a hurry.If there's a fire, you are not going to be looking at a safety tab and trying to figure out how to take it off, you're just going to be ripping at it to remove it, and this comes off easily. Unless you have small kids who play with things, I would even suggest removing it in advance to break the tabs, and then reinserting it with the tabs already broken.That way you can get it off very easily, yet it still acts to prevent accidental discharges.

Unlike the fire extinguishers you may be familiar with, this is a sodium bicarbonate dry chemical extinguisher, designed specifically for grease and oil fires (although it will still be somewhat effective for regular fires).As most people know, you should never throw water on a grease fire, but instead smother it with sand or baking soda. This extinguisher essentially propels baking soda onto the fire to prevent the chemical reaction between heat, fuel, and oxygen, and put out the fire.Although dry chemical extinguishers like this are becoming less popular than wet chemical extinguishers, this is still a very effective product.I wouldn't buy one of these for a commercial kitchen, but would for a home.

We had a kitchen fire in our oven, and flames shot up the side of the wall.The fire was contained mostly to the oven at the time, but the Kidde FX10K had it out within about 2 seconds flat.It does discharge the entire canister very quickly (you can only really use this once). It is so effective that you shouldn't need to use it very long, unless you freak out and miss the fire completely.Another advantage is that, since it's essentially baking soda, you can just wipe up the chemicals with a wet rag once you're done, and the extinguisher shouldn't cause any real damage.You could spray your sofa with this stuff and clean it up fairly easily.

I strongly suggest anyone who doesn't have an extinguisher in their kitchen designed specifically for class K (kitchen) fires purchase this and keep it in a convenient location.I firmly believe our house would have burned down had we not had it.

(More customer reviews)We specifically bought this new Sony model to work with my son's iPod Touch 3rd Generation.Sadly, Sony car radios are NOT compatible with these newer iPod Touch!Hard to believe.We spent a few hours with Sony customer support, but to no avail.Just a waste of our time.We went to the store and used the same iPod on other Sony models, and they also did not work.Kenwood and Pioneer worked just fine with this same iPod Touch.Very frustrating.(Note:We also have an older iPod Touch 2nd Generation, and the Sony did work with that one okay.)

Bottom line:This seems like a nice radio if you only have an older iPod.But for the newer iPod Touch 3G (and presumably 4G), you need to be looking for a different brand, like Kenwood.We ended up un-installing this and getting our money back, and instead bought the Kenwood.

First thing, this is a quality, well made product.Unlike a lot of car power adapters, this provides a clean, shielded source of power that doesn'tput off a lot of interference.The FM transmitter, like most FM transmitters, isn't overpowering, but does an ok job when you aren't in an area crowded with FM signals.

Any FM transmitter is going to get buried in the middle of a city.These things work best in lesser populated areas where there are empty frequencies.Belkin's website has a tool for their FM transmitters, that can give you an estimate of the best FM frequencies to try in any given Zip code.

This transmitter has a great display and worked well in my local area andin several of the surrounding areas.

A couple things I really liked about this.First, while the power adapter is engaged, the Zune will display the LCD so you can see cover art and song information while keeping the Zune charged.Secondly the FM transmitter has a great digital display that is clearly visible during the day and night.

Only thing I didn't like is that the FM Transmitter just inserts into the player without actually locking.It stays put ok, but not if you have your Zune in a case.(At least not in the Silicone case I was using).

Folks, if you live in a city, your not going to be happy with any FM transmitter.Also, different FM transmitters work differently in various cars.I've tested several, there is no rhyme or reason.Try one out, if it doesn't work ok, return it and try a different one.If you live in a big city, get an adapter to run directly into your stereo.No FM transmitter is going to work.FCC doesn't allow them to have enough signal to drown out the local stations crowding your local airwaves.

The installation was simple, involved drilling one hole for wiring to route wires into my Travel Trailer, and fishing wires through hole.(I already had wires as I have five year old Sunsei solar panels). I furnished two wood screws to mount the unit to the wall and believe they will hold as the unit is lightweight. The unit worked correctly immediately and the instructions on operation are clear. The only area of concern is all the wire attachment points resemble stereo speaker attachments from which wires detach too easily no matter how tight you get them. At least I will know immediately where the problem is if I have a short. Keeping my fingers crossed and may not be a problem.

First time it went off the cop was 2 feet from me,maybe he had just turned on his radar.I still need to read the directions to read the codes but it has gone off when I have seen someone pulled over but yesterday it went off about 2 second before the cop was in site hiding. It weighs about nothing and looks cheap. Has no real options other than volume and city or highway. After that you just have to hope.

Wide Detection
The KAT600 provides distinct visual and audible alerts to warn you of the presence of X, K, and all kinds of Ka Band radar guns in the front and rear of you. It also provides 360 degree laser detection with adaptive laser tracking (ALT) for better laser performance. Stay alert with a 3.4 mile radar detection range for radar and 2.5 miles for laser.
Integrated Laser Scrambler Disables Police LIDAR
Lidar sends out laser pulses and measures how long it takes to hit your car and come back. From the speed of light it can determine your range. It sends out several more pulses and calculates your speed from the change in distance over time. The KAT-600 transmits pulses electronically timed at 100 feet apart. This only allows the Lidar to see up to 100 feet so it is unable to calculate your speed.
VG-2 Immunity
VG-2 are devices police use to detect radar detectors. This model provides the benefit of 'undetectability' by alerting you to the presence of VG-2 signals.
Advanced Micro-Scan
Scans the radar bands 2-4 times faster than as any other detector. This allows Rocky Mountain devices to pick up the new P.O.P. radar that no one else can.

Plus One woofer cones
This patent pending technology deliver a cone with more surface area than competing models of the same size. The result is increased bass output and higher efficiency.
True Four Ohms
All Reference speakers feature two ohm voice coils. Original factory-installed speaker wiring in many cars is 18-22 gauge. This wire, and heating in the voice coil when power is applied, increase the impedance "seen" by the amplifier or head unit. The impedance of Reference Speakers has been adjusted to compensate for this increase and can be safely driven by any head unit.
Edge-driven textile dome tweeter
These are not commonly used w-domes, but fully-edge-driven domes like those found in better home audio speakers. The benefit is increased power handling and reduced distortion at high output levels. This technology also allows for better integration with the mid/woofer.
Rubber surround

Grill
The grill is both decorative and protective, preventing the Subwoofer from accidental damage from other items, such as golf clubs, groceries or book bags that might be tossed into the cargo area where the Bazooka Woofers are typically mounted.

Garmin nuvi 1490T 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with nuMaps Lifetime Review

(More customer reviews)I received the 1490T on Tuesday evening and downloaded all the updates and new maps.I paired it with my Bluetooth phone and left it to charge overnight.On Wednesday we left Central Florida for the Panhandle and the 1490T worked flawlessly - this GPS was really terrific and we played with most every function.I turned it off and put it in the center console to keep it safe and left it overnight.Got it out and plugged it in the next morning and the screen flashed white then the Garmin name appeared - that is where it sits today.YES, I tried resetting the unit, turned it off and on and with and without the power adapter plugged in. Nothing works - it comes on and flashes a white screen and then the word "garmin" on the screen and it sits there.We made the trip back home without this amazing GPS and were just totally dissappointed.It was so nuch fun using it going up..
This was my 2nd Garmin in 1 week to go bad.I purchased a 265WT last week but the bluetooth would shut the gps down when it engaged. I obtained a RMA from Amazon as I decided to just go ahead and jump up to the latest feature rich unit (the 1490T).I previouslly owned a Magellan Crossover for the past 4 years and it is still running great but I wanted to upgrade and add the bluetooth.It appears that even though Garmin is gaining market share, they have sacrificed their quality to hold profits.I am going to try again with another 1490T as we did really love it but we are concerned over the Garmin GPS quality.
UPDATE - 06-02-2010
I received an email from Garmin support who offered the following (Thank you for contacting Garmin International, I am sorry to hear that this has happened. Your GPS will require warranty service. Please return your device to the address below ---- Once we receive your GPS Unit and check it into the system, you will receive it back in approximately 10 - 14 days. For most units, the device will be exchanged for a newly overhauled device)

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!Ship, at my cost to Garmin, wait 10-14 days and get an "overhauled" unit back.After only 5 hours of use on a brand new unit???????????I'm not a happy camper with Garmin!

NOW - Amazon on the other hand emailed me a return shipping label to send my dead gps back to them and they sent me a brand new NUVI 1490T (overnight) at the same time.AS I am writing this I am already updating my new unit.Amazon is GREAT - Garmin's customer service policy sucks.. (and this was over the Memorial day weekend - WOW)

June 23, 2010 - followup
I've been using the 1490T on a regular basis now and it is working just great.Everything is working including the traffic information updates.I have seen the occasional advertising from the fm traffic receiver but the messages are totally out of the way and cause no problems at all.this is a really terrific GPs and we continue to love it.I downloaded additional POI including the speed and red light cameras.Very nice feature and lets you know in plenty of time to be careful.
Although I love this unit I still harbor negative feelings toward Garmin and their customer service policy.

UPDATE 07-08-10
I received an email from Garmin telling me that I had to download a 'MANDATORY" free update.This update is to fix the previous problem I had on the first unit I had received.I followed the instructions, the download went fine and the new version was updated to 4.40.I disconnected the unit from the computer and the 1490T will no longer run.It is dead as a door nail.I have tried everything but it will not respond at all..

I am again returning this Garmin 1490T to Amazon but for a full refund this time.This Garmin 1490T and Garmin support is the worst there is.
