Whistler XTR-105R Radar/Laser Detector (Factory Refurbished) Review

Whistler XTR-105R Radar/Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using radar detectors since I got my license 11 years ago, this is my third and favorite one. It's easy to use, detection is excellent, the audible warning is loud and visual warning is bright (even in sun glare). One of my favorite features on this detector is the "memory".When you turn it off (or it turns itself off after 6 hours) and you turn it back on it remembers all of it's previous settings - whether you were in city / highway mode, whether VG2 was on or not, etc.

Product Description:
Whistler's XTR-105 is an affordable, full-featured laser/radar detector. With total band protection from radar signals, 360-degree laser detection, Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, and plenty more, you'll get an effective detector that doesn't break the bank.

An affordable, full-featured laser/radar detector. Click to enlarge.
3 City Modes/Highway Mode
Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity, and is the default setting of Whistler laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.
Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes
Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed.
Alert Priority
When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Easy-to-read icons to indicate power, city mode, radar band identification, and signal strength.
Includes windshield mount and power cord. Click to enlarge.
Vehicle Battery Saver Mode
The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within 3 hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, unplugged or any button is pressed before the 6 hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.
Safety Warning System--SWS
This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.
VG-2 Cloaking
The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. Thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology, your detector will remain invisible to VG-2 detection.

Pioneer GEX-INNO2BK Inno 2 Portable XM Satellite Radio with MP3 Capability Review

Pioneer GEX-INNO2BK Inno 2 Portable XM Satellite Radio with MP3 Capability
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had XM for four years, and this is the third type of unit I've had, and it is, by far, the best.I owned the portable Delphi unit, which worked fine.I bought this Inno for a friend, and when I saw it, I fell in love and bought one myself.

Why I love it:

Size:It is small, and sleek. It comes with a little leather case to protect it (bravo to Pioneerfor not making me spend another $30 on an after-market case!) on the go.
Reception:It has an internal antenna - that little stub on the top of it in the picture is the antenna.Unlike the old Delphi, no need for an external wire clipped to clothing for reception;the reception is GREAT and smooth.
Battery:I haven't gone out all day yet, but after three hours yesterday, the battery was still over half charged. The battery indicator is clear as well. BTW, the unit comes with a slight charge, so you can "play" with it right away; no maddening "please wait 8 hours before first use."
Recording:Easy to quickly record a station, a single song, and even schedule a recording in the future. This is good for the talk radio channels.
Menu:Easy to flip through and select menus. The display screen is a great improvement; it isn't just color because it's cool; it's designed to make navigation easier.
Power:No need to lug cradle on trips. It comes with an additional more compact charger for travel. Thanks!

Why someone might complain:
Earphones: I've read reviews complaining about the earbuds.Yes, they are cheap, but so what? I've got so many other ones scattered about, it isn't really an issue.I use my ipod buds, my Bose headset, whatever.Who cares about the little earbuds? It's just something so the package is complete, and you can listen right away.
FM Modulator:Not internal to the unit, but must be purchased with the car or other kit.But then again, there are so many of those on the market, I appreciate that they didn't eat up size/functions with the modulator that is easily added on elsewhere. This is a PORTABLE unit.I don't really need a modulator when I'm out walking around...
Memory:Again, I've heard complaints about the storage size for books and recordings.I wouldn't have been surprised if there had been a slot for a card, but I'mokay with that. I've got an ipod; I'll leave my books on there.I'll use this radio as a RADIO.

OVERALL it's great.Reception is good and consistent, screen easy to navigate, solid battery charge, and the accessories in the box are great - no need to buy aftermarket anything.

Kensington 33365 Pico FM Transmitter for iPod 5G and Nano (Black) Review

Kensington 33365 Pico FM Transmitter for iPod 5G and Nano
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, it will transmit the music from your iPod to you car stereo. But will it equal the sound quality of having a direct connection? No way. This isn't really a criticism specific to the Kensington. None of these devices consistently deliver great sound. I have tried four or five different brands, in two vehicles, both with very good quality receivers and speakers. At best, you get sound quality that I would grade a "B." You tend to lose volume and dynamic range. And unless you live in a very remote area, you are periodically going to get static interference from other radio stations and maybe other electronic devices.

Bottom line, this is a nifty unit in the sense that it is so small and connects to the bottom of a Nano. But don't expect CD quality music. Also, if you have this unit connected, you are using the Nano battery to power the transmitter, and you can't connect a charger at the same time.

Best bet: Get a car stero with an auxiliary "line in." If you can't, you might actually get better sound with a Sony cassette adaptor.

You've never before heard sound this great from an FM transmitter this small. The Kensington 33365 Pico FM Transmitter for iPod 5G and Nano (Black) plays your iPod wirelessly through any FM stereo--including a car stereo, home stereo, or clock radio--making it a great value for listeners who want to enjoy their favorite songs without headphones.
This ultra-thin, ultra-sleek FM transmitter includes such features as ClearFM technology for richer lows, crisper highs, and better stereo separation, advanced power technology that minimizes battery drain on your iPod, and the ability to select any available FM frequency so you can always find one that is free of interference. InstallerNet DVD Navigation InstallCard Review

InstallerNet DVD Navigation InstallCard
Average Reviews:

When I showed $200 DVD navigation installcardto the shop owner, he told me that install card is giving him only $128. I confirmed it by talking to installcard rep. on phone; she said the remaining 40% is for installcard fees. Thus, I paid not only $200 for install card but an extra $72 to make it $200 for the installation shop. If you are a goof, you are welcome to buy this total loss. The best thing is to find an installer yourself in your area rather than involving these people and paying them 40% commission.

Installation does not include mounting brackets or wiring adapter harnesses, which may be extra.
Visit www.InstallCard.com for more information.

Notes:

(situations where extra charges may apply at time of installation)

If the factory wires or dashboard has been cut or damaged due to a previous unprofessional installation or theft, installation may require additional parts and labor.

Onstar and some other factory security systems play through the factory radio, and the installation of an after factory stereo may require replacement modules.

If the in-dash DVD player has a satellite antenna that has to be mounted on the dashboard or the exterior of the vehicle, installation may require additional parts and labor.

In most cases the in-dash DVD player will also take the place of an existing car stereo. In some vehicles this will require a non-standard installation or rewiring a factory amplifier or steering wheel controls.

Some vehicles may require optional mounting brackets or additional labor due to the complexity of the existing radio removal.

If the in-dash monitor has either an optional or required video input that is not built into the unit, and has to be mounted separately in the vehicle--such as a Playstation, DVD or VCR connection--installation may require additional parts and labor.

Silblade WB122S Premium Black Silicone Wiper Blade - 22" Review

Silblade WB122S Premium Black Silicone Wiper Blade - 22'
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All I can say is wow... just... wow. I wanted some good replacement windshield wiper blades for the Bosch blades I had (they were about a year and a half old and weren't holding out well). I did my research and decided to look into silicon rubber blades after reading so much about them. I was first going to get the PIAA brand, however the price and five year warranty the Silblades offered changed my mind. I haven't looked back since.

One of the things I hated about my old blades is they ended up making a lot of noise when sliding against the windshield unless there was a decent amount of water pouring down. From the first day I installed these onto my car and that first rain drizzle came down I was sold. The blades are whisper quiet, even with just a little moisture on the glass. You literally won't hear them. Heck, they are quiet even if you have no water on the glass. All you will hear is the motors that turn the blades. My old Bosche blades weren't anywhere near that quiet, even right out of the box.

The Silblades seem to work really well in getting the water off the windshield too. I dare say better than any other blades I have used. Some other blades I had would sometimes leave a thin trail of water still on the glass, but not the Silblades. Everything wipes clean from the blade's path. Also it's true what they say about the silicone in the rubber leaving a protective coating. The rain on your windshield will start to bead just like after waxing your car. I can't say it happened immediately because... well my windshield was waxed the day before I installed the blades. However the beading has lasting much, much longer than it should have from waxing alone.

I live in Houston, TX so I'm love how these blades hold up against the searing heat. No cracks yet or even color fading. I can't tell you how well they do in snow and ice since we don't get much of either here, and I haven't travelled anywhere to test the blades on that yet. However I don't doubt the manufacturer's claims on standing up to the bitter cold.

The PIAA silicone blades claimed they could do all of these things too. However they were $25 per blade and were only guaranteed to work a year. The Silblades have a five year warranty and the price can't be beat. If you really, REALLY want a noticeable difference in our windshield wiping experience then I suggest you grab these for your own vehicle. You will thank me for it.

Kicker Comp 07TCVT102 Thin-Prof Seal Box 2-Ohm Subwoofer Review

Kicker Comp 07TCVT102 Thin-Prof Seal Box 2-Ohm Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this subwoofer and a 460watt kicker amp under the seats in my truck. The box is very tight and small enough to fit about anywhere. The bass is pounding, most people assume I'm running two tens. I listen to lots of indie, classics, rock, and metal, and this sub is great for it. The bass is very tight and controlled (no mud). If you listen to heavy metal it feels like someone is kicking you in the back every time the bass drum hits (which is awesome). Overall, amazing sound quality.

BUT. i would not suggest this sub if you mainly listen to rap and hip hop. Don't get me wrong, when you turn on some rap this sub definitely produces some deep bass. but since the box is sealed and small, and the speaker is a 10 inch, it can not handle rap at extremely loud levels. it doesnt sound like crap, it just can't produce the deep deep notes at high volumes, so you hear the note at a higher octave than what its meant to be.

Get this sub if you want some hard hitting bass to fit in a tight space. If you're looking to shatter glass with some rap, go find a 12 inch or 15 inch in a large vented box.

SIRIUS Stratus 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit Review

Display is easy to read. Setup was very easy. Sound quality is good (not as good as my iPod). Wish it had a "scan" option to autoplay a few seconds from each channel. Well worth the $40 I paid for it on Amazon. Overall I am very happy.

After contacting customer service I learned that the Sirius Customer Service Database has all account passwords available in plain text for CS reps to read and have access to. It is unacceptable that a modern technology company would not safeguard customer passwords from the eyes of employees, making my password vulnerable to theft by an unhappy employee, contractor, hacker or anyone else who could gain access to Sirius CS database records. Too many companies have been forced to disclose the theft of customer data due to human error and Sirius is leaving the door wide open to a future security breach. My warning: If you use Sirius, use a unique username and password during account step to safeguard your identity and confidential account info.

If your just starting out, these are a great buy. Had two of them in my Mirage when they had just come out and the bass hit ridiculously hard. Won't shatter the back windshield but good subs none the less. Just make sure you know what your doing and get a proper amp for it.

This sub kick hard, even with the low RMS and cheap price! It is very responsive. I bought this sub to listen to double bass for metal and it does it job perfectly. You can't beat the $40 price either. Highly recommend to anyone.

Product Description:
Even if your pockets don't overflow with dough, KICKER can still provide the best bass for the buck. The Comp Subwoofer represents the best balance between high value and high performance available in today's round-subwoofer market. It's equipped with all the proven KICKER engineering that you expect, and it's got a new look that leaves the impression that it has a mean streak.

The best bass for the buck. Click to enlarge.
Highly engineered top plates. Click to enlarge.
Rigid back bracing completely eliminates distortion. Click to enlarge.
Besides its wicked good looks, the Comp comes with serious muscle, including double stitching on the surround, coil-cooling perimeter venting, and flex-killing ISD (Inverted Structural Dome). The Comp is versatile too, performing in free-air applications as well as in vented or sealed boxes. If all this wasn't enough, the Comp still leaves you with enough cash left over to throw down on a powerful KICKER amplifier to pump all the performance from your sub.
The rigid cone's back bracing completely eliminates distortion, allowing the best bass to be delivered. The larger voice coils, coil wire with intense heat tolerance, highly engineered top plates, and immense power handling still remain, providing the most and best bass from any subwoofer in its class. And here's another first from KICKER--Spiralead tinsel-lead technology for even more strength and durability.
With prices going up on everything else around, the Comp makes perfect sense for any factory upgrade. With the ribbed surround, yellow stitching, nickel-plated push terminals, and a basket design that includes a stylish logo trim ring, the Comp looks as good as it sounds and lets you know who's in the house.
Four sizes are available, ranging from an 8-inch to an extremely affordable and loud 15-inch.

Product Description:
Last year KICKER showed the world that slim and hard-hitting can go together in a true high-performance subwoofer. Now, we've taken it two steps slimmer with the new CompVT 6.5- and 8-inch Subwoofers, giving you even more legit bass options in a smaller space.

Comp performance in a slimmer package. Click to enlarge.
Specialized four-layer voice coil provides the CVT the capabilities to work with large amounts of power. Click to enlarge.
Injection-molded cone with ribbed Santoprene surround. Click to enlarge.
With the same creative inspiration that brought the world the 10- and 12-inch CompVTs in 2007, these subwoofers inherit the same technology running through the CVT family. Ventless, solid-pole design allows it to be mounted directly against the rear wall of a sealed or vented enclosure, permitting the CVT8 to perform with a mounting depth of less than 3-3/8 inches, and the CVT65 with less than 2-13/16 inches! Spring-loaded binding posts are also mounted differently than standard subwoofers to minimize size. And, you can subtract enclosure wall depth from the equation as well with a substitution steel "clearance" adapter plate.
Don't let the smaller sizes suggest this is not a "true" subwoofer! The 8-inch CVT8 handles 200 watts RMS (400w peak) and the 6.5-inch CVT65 handles 150 watts RMS (300w peak). Each woofer's injection-molded cone is shaped to provide maximum excursion from a slender basket, and a specialized four-layer voice coil provides the CVT the capabilities to work with large amounts of power, but in a slimmer package.
KICKER CVT subwoofers utilize many of the same characteristics as other KICKER subwoofers, like Spiralead tinsel-lead technology that allows for better strength, durability, and flexibility. Perimeter venting, high-temp coil wire, Uniplate backplate and pole, double-stitching, and logo trim ring around the steel basket's outer edges are also features the CVT inherits. And with the cone's modified spoke design, 360-degree back bracing, and ribbed Santoprene surround, the CVT becomes another KICKER subwoofer bound to shake the car audio world.
CVT8 Features

    Legendary KICKER sound
Flat SoloKon for strength and accuracy
T cut top plate for magnetic field strength
    Single coil
Pole vents are rear of cone

    Spiralead tinsel leads

Beltronics V965 Vector Radar and Laser Detector (Black/Silver) Review

Beltronics V965 Vector Radar and Laser Detector
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used many low end detectors - Whistler, Cobra, Uniden, etc.For several years I used a Beltronics 906.About 2003 I noticed that it wasn't doing its job.I found myself in several situations where it was obvious that radar was being used and I got barely a beep from the 906.Something was very wrong.

I scoured the Internet doing research, trying to figure out what new radar was being used that my detector was failing to pick up.I came across one site in which an expert stated that any detector made prior to 2001 or 2002 was almost worthless today and would fail to detect modern radar. That described my detector!I did further research and discovered that some police departments across the US were using a new radar called POP.Several models, including the Beltronics 965, scan for POP.Having good experience with Beltronics in the past, I went with this model.

I have been using the 965 for several months now and I can savely say that it _works._However, the new fangled radar being used by the police, at least in my area, was not POP.It appears that the local state police have some kind of new KA radar that earlier models can't pick up.I've never found out what it is.All I know is that the older models don't work.

Some of the hype about POP might be hyperbole. As for the 965, its detection of POP is, well, just about useless. My detector is set on City/No X detection and it freuquently is set off by false POP alarms.Traffic lights seem to be the most common problem. After that it seems to be other cars with their own detectors. My advice on the POP, unless you live in a state where you know it's being used, is don't bother setting up your detector to monitor for it.The truth is, here in the US northeast, I've yet to detect a single POP radar used by the police.

So why bother with this model? Most importantly, independent tests have shown beltronics detectors to be some of the best in the market.Just check out the tests at at speedzones dot com.If you're looking at detectors in the 150 to 250 range this is the one to buy. It's a current model - along with the beltronics 995 - which makes it the best choice for current radar situations.Unless you like the bells and whistles on the 995, this model is the one you'll want. The 995 is overkill and likely has the exact same detection range as the 965.

If you're looking for a cheaper detector you might want to check out the Whistler 1783.It's a good cheaper substitute. But if you're willing to pay more for a detector that will pull in that signal 5 to 20 seconds quicker, this is the one want.In my own tests I've been able to pick up radar signals more than a mile away.I've never had that level of detection with _any_ of the detectors I've used in my lifetime.

Mio C520 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Review

Mio C520 4.3 inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
==== UPDATE October 2, 2007 ====
I bought a Nav-Mat Portable GPS Dash Mount for use in trips to California, where it is illegal to attach a GPS to your windshield. The Nav-Mat bean bag mount simply works great with the Mio C520 and is very stable. Check out the picture under customer images.

==== UPDATE August 21, 2007 ====
The following statement was in my original review and has been removed: "If you plan to use it in Europe, just Google "MioMap V3.3 Western Europe for Mio C220 - C320 - C520" and you should find some UK vendors who sell the SD card."

The fact is that although there are vendors in UK who sell the Europe map, the current Europe maps cannot be used in US/Canada models of C520 due to a license issue. Sorry if this caused confusion. Please read the forums at mionav dot com for updates on this issue.

==== UPDATE August 16, 2007 ====
I updated MioMap to the July 5, 2007 version, still v3.3, following the directions in MioNav dot com, which is linked to the Mio topics in the gpspassion dot com forums. (Search for the topic "Updates for miomap V3.3 are available" and you will find a link to download "MioMap V3 Updater for C320 and C520" from Mio's European website).

This update cures the stuttering problem reported in some earlier versions of MioMap. It also adds a Mute button on the map screen under the Bluetooth button. It does not update the maps or POI data, and leaves the History intact.
==== END UPDATES ====

OVERVIEW:
After doing tons of research to find a competent GPS navigation system under $350, I narrowed down my choice to two models - the Magellan Maestro 3140 and the Mio Digiwalker C520. I would have also considered the Garmin Nuvi 250, but it lacks both text-to-speech and Bluetooth capability which I wanted. If ease of use is most important, I would say the Magellan Maestro 3140, which is a huge improvement over its predecessor, the Maestro 3100, would have been an excellent choice. But since I was not gadget shy, the Mio Digiwalker C520, with its widescreen form factor and advanced capabilities was the unit for me.

The Mio C520 packs in US and Canadian maps with text-to-speech routing instructions, Bluetooth, an MP3 player, a video player, a picture viewer and a contact manager that synchronizes with MS Outlook. The installation is pretty painless. The suction cup holder, which is precision made in Germany, works very well and easily installs onto the windscreen of any car (contrary to what the previous reviewer claims). The Mio works right out of the box with instructions in the tiny manual. If you are willing read the full manual located in the supplied CDROM, and go through a very minor learning curve, you will find the user interface most satisfying and will profit from its awesome capabilities.

It has some cool features, like the ability to display map coordinates and altitude, and has the ability to automatically synchronize time and date with the satellite. It's signal pickup is lightening fast due to the state-of-the-art 20-channel SirfStarIII receiver. It actually picks up the satellite signal from inside my house. If you are further geek-inclined, visit the forums in gpspassion dot com - which show you how to unlock the GPS operating system (Windows CE 5.0) and install custom applications and utilities.

Now consider that the street price of the equivalent widescreen Garmin (the Nuvi 660) is $300 more than the Mio C520, and you can understand why the Mio tops MobilePlanet dot com's current popularity list. The Mio is perhaps among the best GPS' out there at any price!

EXPERIENCE:
On a recent trip to San Francisco with my wife, the Mio turned out to be a real trip saver. It listed our hotel in its point of interest (POI) database and got us to all our destinations without ever getting us lost. Needless to say, it saved us about a couple of hours each day on the trip, even though we were pretty familiar with the Bay Area. Not once did we have to stop for (or argue over) directions! The POI database listed all the major and minor points of interest, including museums, concert halls, gas stations, car rental agencies, seven-elevens, hospitals, etc. It also included hard to find, hole-in-the-wall restaurants. It has restaurants categorized by cuisine, which includes "Japanese", "Greek", "Indian" and so on.

While the routing capability is excellent, it is not 100% perfect. (None of the portable GPS models are perfect). While driving on 101 southbound to SFO airport, it asked us to "bear left on Bayshore freeway southbound" seconds before asking us to take the San Bruno exit to the airport on the right. While this was not a navigational glitch per se, it did have the potential for causing confusion. (Of course, I later understood that "bear left" meant the freeway bears left, not "get on the left lane", duh!). A couple of times it asked us to take left turns in downtown San Francisco that were not allowed. When we ignored it, it recalculated the routes in a matter of seconds, without forcing us to take U turns (which some other GPS models make you do).

Now lets put that in perspective and take, for example, a day trip to Monterey, Pebble Beach, Carmel and back to San Francisco (consisting of, say, 100 routing manoeuvers). On such a trip, the Mio would give confusing instructions perhaps two or three times in total, which meant it was perfect approximately 97% of the time. This is excellent performance in my book. I am perhaps looking at this with a more critical eye than warranted. The important thing is that Mio C520 recalculated the route the moment it realized we were off route, and always got us to our destination quickly.

By considerably reducing the planning chores, the Mio immensely improved the satisfaction of our holiday. We will never go on another trip without it!

TEXT TO SPEECH
The text-to-speech (TTS) feature, which causes the Mio to speak the street names, turns out to be valuable, especially when there are a lot of quick turns to make. The TTS ("Samantha") voice on the Mio C520 is perhaps a bit brusque but pleasant enough. There is a chime before each voice instruction, which alerts you to an upcoming manoeuver. (The TTS voice is in no way "HORRIBLE" or "VERY" chatty as described in the previous review. With all due respect to the previous reviewer, his review is pretty opinionated and unfair). The TTS voice did not stutter even once. The version of Mio Map on my unit is dated May 18, 2007. Note that some earlier versions are reported to have a TTS voice stuttering problem.

SCREEN:
The the 4.3-inch touch screen with 480x272-pixel resolution is vivid and sharp. (The screen is not washed out, as the previous reviewer claims). And it goes without saying you can easily adjust the brightness to your desired level. The touch-screen keyboard is in QUERTY format and has a predictive function, making it easy to enter an address quickly. The automatic night mode feature is pretty neat and wow inducing. It switches to night mode based on time of sunset for the current date, time zone, latitude and logitude!

NAVIGATION PERFORMANCE:
On the subject of navigation mapping data, the conventional wisdom is that in North America, Navteq data is more accurate than Tele Atlas - which the Mio uses. However, the recent buzz is that Tele Atlas has significantly narrowed the gap with Navteq, especially with its latest map versions released after the fall of 2006. A recent comparison of Navteq versus Tele Atlas in gpsreview dot net actually shows the Tele Atlas' mapping data to be slightly more accurate than Navteq's, while another study in gpsmagazine dot com has the results the other way around.

In my own tests, which included comparing the Mio C520's routing with online maps by Yahoo, Google and Mapquest, showed that none of the routing engines were perfect, with Google coming out perhaps slightly better than the others. To my delight, I found that the routes chosen by the Mio C520, which uses the latest Tele Atlas data, is pretty close to those chosen by Yahoo. Rest assured, the navigation performace of the Mio C520 is indeed excellent.

ROUTING FEATURES:
Typically you would enter an address or POI around the current city. Or you can change the destination city, state or country and enter an address or select a POI for that destination. The Mio also has the ability to route to a contact (an address you entered in the contact manager, under Tools->Contacts).

There is a peculiar way you need to enter North American addresses into the contact manager in order for the "Route to Contact" feature to work. For example, consider the address: 111 FIRST STREET, APT# 101, FREMONT, CA 94533. You have to enter 'CA, 94533' in the 'State:' field, 'FREMONT' in the 'City/Postcode:', 'FIRST STREET' in the 'Street:' field and 'Apt 101, 111' in the 'House number:' field. (Note that you need to enter the state and zip code separated by a comma in the 'State:' field). Once you enter the contact address as the Mio expects it, it creates the route to the contact address super fast (usually in less than 10 seconds).

The Mio has a decent job of position error filtering, which attempts to accurately estimate your car's position on the map. Even when driving at 70MPH on a freeway, the Mio is off by no more than 10 yards. It also estimates the car's speed within 2MPH of my car's odometer reading. When driving on regular streets at around 30MPH, the display of the car position is spot on. There are several split-screen views which you can cycle through, giving you the distance to the next manoeuver, the current time, the estimated time...Read more›

LG LN735 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator Review

LG LN735 3.5 inch Portable GPS Navigator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought the LN735 navigator and am happy with it.

Pros:

1.Finds your location within seconds of turning it on.
2.The only time it loses its location is inside a tunnel.
3.Very nice display.Maps and fonts are very clear.
4.Calculates your route in a couple of seconds.
5.Does a nice and logical job of calculating the best route, most of the time.
6.Entering addresses is very easy.

Cons:

1.Battery life in the spec is 4 hours.I can only really get 2-3 hours out of it.
2.After it calculates your route, you can tell it to avoid a road, and it will recalculate a different way.BUT, you cannot detour a road that you are on.So if you are sitting in traffic on the highway, you cannot tell it to recalculate and completely avoid the road you are on.
3.For some reason, it like to calculate routes by getting you off of the highway as fast as possible and have you take more city streets. So, if it is a little farther to take the highway to your destination, but is quicker due to highway speeds, it will still route you through city streets, because it is shorter even though you would be moving at city speeds.
4.It does not remember the contrast setting.Every time you power it on, it is at full contrast, which doesn't help the already short battery life.
5.The volume of the voice is too low, even at full volume.

This is a very good unit, and you get a lot of useful features for the price.
