Torin Aluminum Race Jack with Single Piston Pump - 1 1/2-Ton, Model# T8150121 Review

Torin Aluminum Race Jack with Single Piston Pump - 1 1/2-Ton, Model# T8150121

I bought this from a well known online tool shop during a good sale. I have a lowered car and using my standard Sears jack requires removing part of the front valence followed by a musical chairs dance of alternating jack and jackstands to get all four wheels off the ground.

This "race jack" did away with most of that, as it has a hefty handle, pumps up quickly, and could be slipped under the car from almost any direction. It made getting under the car much easier.

I enjoyed use of this jack for about 1 year, until one day while lying on the floor of my garage, the jack started to slowly give out before I had my jackstands in place. I slid away from the car and started pumping again, but there was hydraulic fluid leaking from somewhere on the jack and in no time I had a puddle.

So now I'm back to my cumbersome but reliable Sears jack, which has given me many years of service for the tiny investment I made, but I miss the low profile, easy to use features of my broken Torin. I tried to contact the manufacturer, but nobody answered the phone (I called during business hours) and I have not been able to identify a source for rebuild kits. At this point I don't want to put any money into it, so I imagine I'll spend money on a good, quality jack and send this one to the recyclers.

P215/60R16 Michelin HydroEdge Tires (Quantity: 1) Review

P215/60R16 Michelin HydroEdge Tires

Being that I have more than stock horsepower under the hood of my Ford Windstar there's only one tire that I'll trust whether around town, carving through mountain roads or flying down the highway at speeds the Michelin HydroEdge tires. With their directional tread, semi-agressive tread and great stance you're sure to get the most grip whether it's dry or if it's raining down bucket loads of water. The design of the tread moves all the water out of your path giving you great traction and keeping you from hydroplaning. The side wall of these tires are fantastic giving you not only a great ride but also fantastic handling and for reasons like this is why I continue to purchase no other brand but Michelin. After having some near life taking problems with Goodyear tires I started buying Michelin's in the early 1990s and I've never had a single problem with any tire!Being that my tires can witness anything from 125

Shop-Vac 5840500 5-Gallon 2.0-Peak HP Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

Shop-Vac 5840500 5-Gallon 2.0-Peak HP Wet/Dry Vacuum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this vacuum about a week ago- so I can't speak to the longevity of the unit, but so far it does what it does well. What it doesn't do- it probably can't do.I understand why other reviewers have given it 1 star, but frankly I don't think they were using it for what it was intended for.

What this vacuum is- I puchased this vacuum in order to pick up the ashes out of my fireplace after they had cooled off.I wasn't looking for a ton of power or durability with this vacuum since I already had a full-sized and very powerful Attix Alto wet/dry vac. What I needed was something that was easy to carry around, big enough to hold some ashes, durable enough to be used on LIGHT-duty jobs, and powerful enough to pick up LIGHT-DUTY dirt.Ashes in a fire place are going to wreak havoc on the cleanliness of any wet/dry vacuum, so I didn't want something that was expensive (thus the reason I wasn't using my regular wet/dry vac). All in all, this is a LIGHT-DUTY, PORTABLE, LIGHT WEIGHT wet/dry vacuum with decent suction. It does not suck nearly as hard as my $600 wet/dry (and it shouldn't for 1/20th the price) but it's plenty hard to get the job done.If you are looking to clean up small, dirty jobs- this is a nice little tool.I have used it only on the fireplace so far, but I think it would be decent for car cleaning and the like.It will save me from having to lug around a 50 pound vacuum for the smaller jobs.It may not grab as much as the heavier-duty vacuum, but again- just in case I haven't said it- it's LIGHT DUTY.

What this vacuum is NOT- This vacuum is NOT for cleaning heavy-duty "stuff".It is not for picking up pet hair out of carpets. It is not a stand-alone house-cleaning vacuum. It is not a powerhouse. If you are looking to buy something for general house cleaning- get something else.If you are looking to pick up pet hair or clean carpets- get something with a beater bar.If you are looking to suck a foot of water out of your basement- get a better wet/dry vacuum.Wet/Dry vacuums aren't generally meant for house cleaning anyway- but I do see a lot of Amazon reviews showing people still use them for this purpose.

Other Notes- I got this vacuum home and went to work cleaning out my two fireplaces. It worked great on the first fireplace. Then on the second fireplace it suddenly lost almost all suction. After some inspection I figured out that there is a slight issue with the end of the hose that plugs into the vacuum bucket. The pick-up end is tapered so that if something is too big, it shouldn't get past the tapered part and into the hose. However, larger objects that may squeeze through the tapered part and then turn as they travel down the hose fine, will wedge themselves into the small opening where the hose plugs into the bucket. This issue may be because I am picking up some larger coals that may crumble and conform to the shape of the hose until it hits the end of the hose.I found I don't even have to take the hose off- just squeeze the area with the coal in it to break up the coal and it goes right in.It's a bit of a nuissance, and I'd like to not have to do this, but it's still easier to use the vacuum and crunch things in the hose than to get out the broom and pan to clean the fireplace.Instead of spending 10-15 minutes cleaning the fireplace with a broom/pan, I now spend 2-3 minutes if that- and it's much less messy.

The next issue, I noticed about 10 minutes into using the vacuum on the second fireplace. While I was ducked down in the fireplace working away, everything seemed fine. However, upon looking up I noticed the entire room was engulfed in a cloud. As noted by another reviewer- this is not a hepa filtered vacuum, or even a very well filtered vacuum. It WILL kick dust into the air if you are vacuuming into an open bucket. The simple solution to this is to get a $5 high-efficiency filter bag for the vacuum.I did this and have not noticed the dust at all since I put it in.It also will keep the inside of the vacuum cleaner.

The only other issue that I saw, if it's an issue at all, is that the ring that holds the dry filter onto the foam filter could have clipped in better/tighter.It seems to hold so it's probably not an issue really, but emotionally I'd be more satisfied if I had some way of securing it with a twist, click, etc.

All in all- it's a 4 Star Item.It won't over-acheive, but it is very useful for what it is intended for.

UWS TBS-69-LP Single Lid Low Profile Aluminum Toolbox with Beveled Insulated Lid Review

UWS TBS-69-LP Single Lid Low Profile Aluminum Toolbox with Beveled Insulated Lid
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Originally I planned to compare this UWS truck tool box with the Dewalt version for an a/b comparison. It turned out UWS makes both boxes.I'll try to give you as much information on comparing these identical boxes as possible.

(UPDATE: after installation on identical service trucks in my fleet we noticed the dewalt version has a taller lid by about 1.5 inches than the UWS lid.UWS didn't say anything about the lid difference but if you are looking out the rear window backing up the UWS box doesn't hide as much as the dewalt box due to the lower profile lid)

Since the dewalt dcs70 lacked the 1/2" VSR drill mentioned in the product description, unfortunately my Apples to Oranges comparison turned out to be an Apples to Apples comparison after a little research.Continue to History below.

(The History)

Dewalt does not "make" truck toolboxes, but instead contracts this out to a company named Thule (silent h - pronounced tool).UWS and Thule are the same company due to an acquisition in 9-2007 when Thule bought UWS, so both boxes are made by the same company.Judging by the welding skill, burns, splatter, and marks, I'd go so far as to say they were made by the same person.

The dewalt product did not include the 1/2" VSR Drill, which I'll admit seemed a strange combination (buy a truck toolbox, get a drill), so it put the comparison on very level footing.

Making some phone calls to Thule (UWS) I found out that they proudly manufacture the box for Dewalt. They were very helpful to explain that the dcs70 and tbs-69 are the exact same product, which once they arrived on my shipping dock, I discovered was true (except for the nameplate in front)

These two boxes are both made from .063 Aluminium diamondplate, welded.I'll admit Al is not the easiest material to weld, but there was no effort made to clean up the splatter and burn marks on the welding which even I do when welding and I'm by no means "neat" or obcessive about it.

Thule does make a "BETTER" grade box out of .080 Al that weighs 30 lbs more and has a 4 corner locking system plus a "tough coat" tub and lid liner. It's not sold through Amazon though. This box is UWS's entry level box basically.

(The boxes)

Unpacking the boxes didn't take much - the packing left quite a bit to be desired and did not provide adequate protection to the product - no styrofoam corners, just 2 half sized boxes that nest inside each other with the toolbox inside, and 5-6 straps of clear shipping tape on 3 sides holding it all together.Keep in mind it's almost the size of a coffin.I noted some shipping damage, but then again my 2 boxes spent the last week in a fedex ground truck going cross country to my lab in California.I guess it's not as painful when the FEDEX driver dings up your new toy for the first time.

Both boxes are bright and shiny other than their unpolished welds outside which was disappointing. The inside welds are worse. The two boxes did have slightly different keys which was a pleasant surprise, however the lock system offers less than a few seconds deterrent to a determined theif. Keeping in mind how many $ worth of tools could be inside one of these, I'd prefer a high security lock / key.I STRONGLY recommend you purchase a high security lock/shackle that you can weld to the box and lid to keep people out.

(The A/B comparison)

Well, They are the same box except for the higher lid on the dewalt, both drop shipped from UWD, with the same accessories inside (a sliding black plastic parts tray). The Dewalt version carries a lifetime warantee and their logo, while Thule/UWS offers a 1 year warantee.Realistically if a weld failed 5 years from now, are you going to remove the box from your truck and ship it by truck freight back to dewalt or get your GTAW welder and fix the leak yourself?

The prices of the same box are within a dollar of each other right now, and they weigh within a lb of each other. It's the same box with different nameplates.I liked the simplicity of the Dewalt installation instructions better, but the UWS seemed to be more of a mechanical engineering drawing showing how to bolt the box in your truck and looked more professional than the dewalt "you'll need these items, drill, bolts, ..."

Other than that, these are the same unit. You could consider the heavy duty (.080") version from Thule but that's the only real other option - they mentioned it on the phone. It weighs 30 lbs more.

I'll take some photos of the welds so you can see how they look. Both brands are the same.I am deducting 1 point for inadequate packaging and shipping damage and 1 point for weld quality and locking system.Other than those issues they are nice shiny identical boxes that would look good on any new truck.

Jensen VM9311TS - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner Review

Jensen VM9311TS - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked up this unit without high expectations, but was very surprised with the quality of this unit for the price.

The audio and video quality is superb. It wasn't installed in a vehicle with a full "system", but a plain old minivan. It replaced a 1995 Dodge Caravan factory cassette deck. Yeah, yeah I know. :)

Why did I wait so long? I used an MP3 player with a RF modulator, so I didn't care about the cassette deck. My Rio Karma MP3 player served its purpose for over a year until the cassette mechanism finally took a crap on me, so it was time to purchase a new deck.

I contemplated the idea of just picking up any CD/MP3 deck, but figured why not spend some extra cash and have a new toy that I can enjoy?

Installation was a breeze and I had it installed, wired, and running in less than 30 minutes. The dash in my van is easy to work with, so you mileage may very for ease of installation. There's nothing special about installing this unit when compared to a standard deck.

Now on to the pro's and con's of the VM9311TS:

Pro's:
-First and foremost is the price. You will not find any unit with the features this unit has for this price range!
-Audio and Video quality: playback of DivX, XviD, MPEG's, and standard DVD's are crystal clear. No noticeable pixilation, fading, etc.
-Using the touch screen to navigate through DVD's is very user friendly.
-While not an iPod user yet, the ability to connect your iPod to the unit and have full control over it using the touch screen is a big plus. I actually caved in and bought an 80GB iPod Video. I haven't received it yet, but I am looking forward to getting it. I'm dumping my entire 40GB music collection onto the iPod along with all my episodes of Lost, Prison Break, Family Guy, etc onto one piece of hardware. The ability to fully the iPod using the touch screen is a big plus!
-Full set of audio and video outputs. You can connect this unit to your external amp, subs, etc.
-Full set of audio video inputs. You can plug in your video camera to review what you've recorded, Xbox, PlayStation, and anything else with a standard composite (RCA) yellow jack output.

Con's:
-Navigating a DVD full of MP3 is extremely tedious. Here's why... You get a full dump of EVERYTHING on your screen. You can't navigate by Album, Artist, Year, etc. So if I have a MP3 album of Anita Baker and an MP3 album of Usher I actually have to "click" the directory button over 50 times until I get to the artists with their name's being closer the end of the alphabet. You can also use the soft button on the screen to the next directory, but even then you have to press it over 50 times to get through your entire collection. I called Jensen and they confirmed that yes "you have to navigate through all the albums until you get to what you want.
-To make things worse you can not fast-forward or rewind MP3's. This was also confirmed by Jensen.
-I burned a DVD of all the current Prison Break episodes which were in DivX format. They played back beautifully, but here's the most irritating problem. As soon as you turn off your deck (i.e. turn of your car) the video will start playing over again from the beginning. You can skip over to the next video file on the disc, but again, after power-cycling your vehicle the deck will start over with the first file on the disc.
-As with the MP3's you can not fast-forward or rewind individual video files. This was confirmed by Jensen.
-No ability to change the look of what I call the operating system (OS). You can't change the wallpaper, color scheme, etc. What you see is what you get.
-Navigating through a DVD burned with hundreds if not thousands of MP3's is extremely slow. The OS definitely needs tweaking and enhancements, so I'm hoping that Jensen releases firmware updates in the future.
-Every time you turn your vehicle off and restart it, it takes up to 40 seconds before the track you were listening to resumes on a DVD-R. Navigating and resuming playback with a standard 700MB CD-R is faster when re-starting your vehicle.

So with all the cons aside it's still a pretty nice unit for the price. When the iPod arrives I'll post an update and let you guys know what I think.

It's unfortunate that I had to plunk down another $330 just to get the deck to be more user friendly and functional, but my hands are tied.

For somebody not looking to use the more advanced features such as playback of DivX files this deck is perfect for them. Remember that you can't fast-forward or rewind MP3's, so that may irritate even the non-techie.

So with review coming to an end I give this unit a 3 out of 5.

George

Average Reviews:

Everybody knows that bottle jack is not high tech stuff. The diffirence among many brands is its material and workmanship. I think torin one is winner when compared with sears' 6 ton. You can feel tight response everytime you pump it. For warranty, one is 1 year from walmart, one is 1 year from sears. so the same. However, this kit with a good box and bonus tire wrench is presented in walmart just 15 bulks, but sears' 6 ton alone 19.99,25% more money.But,but---- do not trust my word. Just go Sears, then walmart, and tell us your choice.
